Jainism is an ancient Indian religion that emphasizes non-violence and the ascetic life. It began in the 6th century BCE, the same time as Buddhism was developing. Jains derive their name from the jinas, spiritual conquerors who had achieved liberation and perfection. Included among these are 24 spiritual leaders called “ford-makers” or tirthankaras. The last of the tirthankaras was Mahavira (599-527 BC), a contemporary of the Buddha and the man generally considered the founder of Jainism.
One of the oldest religious traditions of India, Jainism has existed side by side with Hinduism throughout its long history. With fewer than 5 million adherents and comprising less than 1% the Indian population, Jainism has demonstrated a remarkable tenacity and endurance and continues to exert an influence far beyond its small numbers.
Jains are polytheists and pantheists as they believe that every living being has a potential to become God - they believe in reincarnation and seek moksha, once a soul is liberated its is worthy of being labelled a God. However, Jains reject the notion of a creator and do not believe that any external Being can help the soul. This notion has led some to consider Jains as atheists. According to Jain cosmology, the universe and everything in it is eternal. Nothing that exists now was ever created, nor will it be destroyed. The universe consists of three realms: the heavens, the earth and the hells.
